1x Compression 40mm(1 1/2 inch in old money) 135 degree knuckle bend

Nose bars are 4mm brass rod from a nearby model shop but anything between 2mm and 6mm would do. Doesn't have to be brass either, 5mm steel threaded studding would be ideal for mounting "things" on.

Those are totally awesome! Very impressive work. (And a glaring reminder that if I am going to have a steampunk costume for July I should start making it real soon now)
Duke Euphoria De'Gryn: Antique[info]bytepilot on April 30th, 2008 10:46 pm (UTC)
Which imples that something is happening on July 1st and I've not been informed!

I shall complain to my MP at once.
Not that he'll do anything mind...

What are they like to wear? Does the plastic dig in at all?
Duke Euphoria De'Gryn: Gears[info]bytepilot on April 30th, 2008 10:28 pm (UTC)
Not too bad. They may get a little nose padding with some foam if they start to get sore over time.
Misthawk: Impressed[info]misthawk on April 30th, 2008 05:37 pm (UTC)
Fantastic!!! (here via [info]cookwitch's LJ) Are they for face wear, or just for head display?
Duke Euphoria De'Gryn: Quantum[info]bytepilot on April 30th, 2008 10:27 pm (UTC)
Either or both.
They're fitted to Best Beloved's Face more than mine. I'll get some piccys of them as she's wearing them.

What did you use for lenses? They look awesome!
Duke Euphoria De'Gryn[info]bytepilot on April 30th, 2008 10:34 pm (UTC)
(blush) Just some bits of 3mm perspex.
Cut them on a hole saw with the drill bit reversed so that it didn't drill a center hole.

Bit of an iffy technique if you don't have a drill press or a big clamp to hold the drill steady.
An alternative is to cut using a coping saw and just file to approximate size. The fitting isn't that crucial, there's about 4mm leeway.

Shiny!
Figurine-painter's tip: now apply an ink 'wash' to give an 'aged' look, and dry-brush back to shiny metal on the edges that get worn in use.
Duke Euphoria De'Gryn[info]bytepilot on April 30th, 2008 10:37 pm (UTC)
Re: Shiny!
(grin) The ink wash would alas run off the laquer, I'll see what I can fake up using acrylics.

The current paintset is spattered black over bright gold to give an greasy oil spattered look.
Pirate Jenny[info]bonnyread on April 30th, 2008 08:54 pm (UTC)
These are lovely! Tutorial maybe? They look simple enough that I think I could figure out on my own...
Duke Euphoria De'Gryn: king[info]bytepilot on April 30th, 2008 10:40 pm (UTC)
I'll post better instructions as soon as I can.
Currently somewhat surprised by the magnitude of the response!

Basic place to start is with 40mm plastic plumbing parts.
I used a 135 degree knuckle bend because it had two compression rings (eyepieces) and a vaguely useful shaped bit of pipe inbetween that became the side shields.
The rest of it was made up as I went along.
